Like many of you, I am sensitive to the weather conditions and this winter was not pleasant for me. I am sure that bad weather evokes a lot of unpleasant emotions in you as well. Then I remembered just why I love Scandinavia so much. They have some of the worst climate conditions in the world. Yet they learned not just how to live with it but to enjoy it. It has become part of their lifestyle.
You know by now just how much I love Scandinavian furniture, especially the aesthetics of their design. So, today I would love to present you a concept or idea that started in Denmark, thanks to globalization, it is now spreading all over the world. This unique lifestyle has a great influence on interior design as well.
Calmness, serenity, comfort, minimalism and finding beauty in small things… This is all connected to one philosophy called Hygge. As mentioned, a harsh climate forced people to see their home as a sanctuary. Also, to enjoy their free time as much as they can and focus on things that they really care about. Trying to achieve true happiness despite usually depressing conditions that surround them. You need material possessions as well but true happiness can be found in other places.
How to have Hygge in your life?
Be active, present and socialize. Get away from your phone, laptop or PC screen, at least for a while. So, if you are alone, enjoy nature, dancing or a good book. In the company, well… just enjoy spending time with fun and interesting people. Be active and organize some activities that you, your friends and family members can enjoy. Cook a nice meal that you can all enjoy and have a good time.
Think about yourself as well. Happiness in hiding in simple, affordable and small everyday things. Try to discover something new every day. It can be as simple as new activity that you never tried before. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated to set up. Enjoy reading a book under the blanket in the garden, listen to an old gramophone player or just try some new dish. This is where a home furnishing and design are coming in. Just changing something and spicing up your living space can be very rewarding. Try to create a relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy your free time. Your home should be your kingdom. The world around you is exactly what you make of it.
People are strange: they are constantly angered by trivial things, but on a major matter like totally wasting their lives, they hardly seem to notice.
Let nature into your home
Natural and organic materials are welcome in any living space. Hygge urges us to make one more important step. Along with modern furniture that can have elements like wood, leather or stone, throw in some authentic and totally different pieces. It can be an old unfinished wooden sculpture that doesn’t have any practical use, a wattled basket or even a piece of stone that looks interesting only to you. Whatever you find interesting and makes you feel comfortable. Even better if those items have some sentimental value.
The transformation of your home doesn’t have to be abrupt, you can start small. As mentioned just changing one piece in your home can be rewarding. I started by buying some ornaments and changing my bedroom chair. Also, getting a tone of candles. I was slowly discovering places where I could buy Scandinavian furniture. I especially love their classical pieces because of their minimalism and exceptional comfort. It’s not easy to find this kind of furniture, with good quality and from a reliable store. It’s one of the motives to start this blog, along with writing about my favorite furniture designs and pieces. Here you can also discover the best online places to buy mid-century Scandinavian designs. I would love for you to discover Hygge, fantastic furniture designs and enjoy it as much as I do.
